The Joint Commission Improving Health Care Equity Standards and Resources

The Joint Commission has prioritized the elimination of healthcare disparities as a quality and patient safety imperative. As part of the organization’s mission to continuously improve care by finding solutions to ongoing inequity, new and revised standards took effect on January 1, 2023. These standards apply to organizations in the Joint Commission’s ambulatory health care, behavioral health care and human services, critical access hospital, and hospital accreditation programs.

Carol A. Rogers, Ph.D., RN, PMHCNS-BC, Certified Joint Commission Professional, facilitated an online workshop in January 2023. Dr. Rogers provided a deep dive into the new and revised requirements along with additional provider resources.

To support our provider community, we compiled notes and assets for each of the six elements of performance that fall under the new and revised health equity standards. Included in the summary document are:

  • Definitions of health equity and related concepts
  • An overview, implementation considerations, and additional resources for each element of performance
  • The questions that will help jump-start a health equity program
