Sunwave vs. Alleva: Behavioral Health EMR Comparison

All behavioral health EMR comparisons

Sunwave vs. Alleva

Patient engagement extends beyond a portal or a video visit. At Sunwave, we connect behavioral health records and operations with telehealth and structured alumni follow-up. If your organization is comparing Sunwave with Alleva, start with how you want to support the patient journey from the first inquiry through life after discharge.

Why choose Sunwave for care and ongoing engagement?

Put Sunwave on your shortlist when post-discharge follow-up matters alongside admissions, clinical care, and billing. Our platform includes EMR, CRM, revenue-cycle, telehealth, and alumni-management tools. Alleva also offers clinical, admissions, billing, telehealth, and patient-access capabilities. Here, we explain how our approach supports the work of your program and its follow-up team.

Make follow-up part of the software decision

Imagine a residential program preparing someone for discharge. The clinical record documents the episode, but the alumni coordinator also needs a follow-up schedule and a record of later conversations. Those are different tasks. Include both when deciding how your organization will stay connected with former patients.

Our alumni-management tools support scheduled outreach, interaction logs, and engagement reporting. Alongside our telehealth tools and EMR, they give your team a concrete way to plan engagement during and after care. That is a reason to choose Sunwave when ongoing relationships are part of your program’s operating model.

Sunwave vs. Alleva by workflow

Platform approach

Our EMR connects clinical, administrative, and financial workflows. Alleva describes admissions, treatment planning, progress notes, e-prescribing, outcomes, billing, and coordination across teams and facilities. For either setup, identify where the record is maintained and how information moves between the functions your staff use.

Admissions and CRM

Our CRM includes inquiry tracking, referral attribution, VOB status, bed availability, call tracking, and pre-admission tools. Alleva describes lead tracking, referral management, task automation, and communications across the client journey. Compare how an accepted inquiry becomes a clinical record and which CRM components are included in each proposal.

Clinical record

Our EMR includes assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, scheduling, client messaging, and medication workflows. Alleva advertises task-based documentation, customizable templates, e-prescribing, medication schedules, and drug-interaction alerts. Bring the forms, review steps, and access requirements your program uses to both demonstrations.

Revenue cycle and financials

Our revenue-cycle tools include claim generation, error detection, remittance matching, payments, VOB, reporting, and patient-balance tools. Alleva Billing advertises charge capture, claims, insurance verification, patient payments, configurable claim rules, ERA posting, and a Waystar-powered VOB connection. Review payer connections, clearinghouse dependencies, enrollment work, and the billing scope in each proposal.

Telehealth, engagement, and aftercare

Our telehealth tools connect remote sessions with documentation, while our alumni-management tools support follow-up schedules, interaction logs, and engagement reporting. Alleva describes a client portal for upcoming sessions, messages, and goals, as well as telehealth, online scheduling, reminders, and a mobile app. For client-facing work, review each action in the interface your patients will use. For post-discharge outreach, compare the schedule, communication record, and coordinator’s workflow rather than relying on a module name.

Reporting and connectivity

Our revenue-cycle tools include dashboards for financial KPIs, payments, VOB, and charges and claims, along with utilization-review management. Alleva Insights advertises dashboards and analytics, and Alleva also advertises an open API. For the reports and connections you need, establish the available fields, access rights, update frequency, error-handling responsibilities, and export format in each implementation plan.

Alleva-specific implementation points

Alleva’s current site presents the product as behavioral health operations software and names EHR/EMR, CRM, billing, analytics, AI, telehealth, medication management, a client portal, and a mobile app. Alleva calls its EMR easy to use, but that is vendor positioning rather than an independent comparison of usability.

Alleva says onboarding can include configuration of frequently used forms, staff training, a dedicated implementation specialist, and data-migration planning. It also advertises role-specific live training, on-demand modules, and ongoing training. Ask the proposal or statement of work to name the implementation timeline, source systems, migrated record types and attachments, mapping and validation responsibilities, training sessions, go-live coverage, and support targets.

For example, a hypothetical residential program could enter one sample referral, complete a pre-admission assessment, schedule a group, document attendance, create the related charge, post a remittance, discharge the client, and send a follow-up message. Running the same fictional case in both demonstrations reveals field handoffs, permissions, exceptions, and manual steps without relying on broad platform labels.

Alleva and Sunwave proposal checks

  • Have each quote list licensed modules and required third parties separately: EMR/EHR, CRM, billing or RCM, analytics, telehealth, portal or app, medication tools, and post-discharge engagement.
  • Attach acceptance criteria to the same test client in both systems, covering inquiry, admission, documentation, charge creation, claim status, payment, discharge, and follow-up.
  • Require a data and integration schedule naming source and destination systems, sync direction, API access, frequency, error ownership, migration fields, retained attachments, and sample export formats.
  • For Alleva, record which client actions use the app or portal. With our team, map the corresponding portal, messaging, telehealth, and alumni workflows to your organization’s needs.
  • Put one-time and recurring fees, license units, training, go-live coverage, support targets, renewal terms, data-return terms, and termination assistance into the order form or statement of work.

Questions to resolve before selecting either system

What must be settled before migration begins?

Inventory the record types to be moved, including demographics, clinical forms, medications, claims, payments, attachments, signatures, and audit information where applicable. Assign who will extract, map, import, reconcile, correct failures, and approve the result. The acceptance plan should specify record counts, field-level samples, financial-balance checks, attachment checks, rejected-record handling, and access to information that will not be migrated.

How can buyers resolve Alleva’s portal-versus-app boundaries?

Request an authenticated client test account and a feature matrix that distinguishes the mobile app, mobile web, desktop portal, and any separate telehealth experience; ask Alleva to identify whether the app is native, hybrid, or delivered another way. Test appointment viewing and scheduling, reminders, messaging, goal tracking, document completion, video-session entry, accessibility, notification controls, and staff configuration. Put the required interfaces and supported devices in the written scope.

How should staff evaluate day-to-day usability?

Treat each vendor’s usability adjectives as positioning and run representative work by role. Ask admissions to resolve a duplicate inquiry, a clinician to correct and sign a note, billing to handle a rejected claim, a client to join a virtual session, and an administrator to export records. Record completion time, errors, help required, inaccessible steps, and handoffs between tools.
